Example of Shiny Server:
US Refinery Capacity in 2017

One way to create interactive maps for online use is by creating a Shiny Server utilizing the R statistical programming language. This is particularly useful if you are mapping a dataset that includes variables that need to be calculated in order to be portrayed. I have created the below map as an example of what you can create using a Shiny Server. It maps the refining capacity of different sites across the US for different petroleum products in 2017. You can zoom and pan around the map, as well as see the capacity for different products and supplies using the dropdown menus found in the legend.

If you have some familiarity with R and want to try creating your own Shiny Server map, feel free to use this map as a starting point. Use the button below to download all the files you will need to get started. You will also need to download RStudio and create a free account at ShinyApps.io. It may also be useful to read these guides on creating a Shiny Server and mapping in R.
